ESMA tyre compliance: ESMA Tyre Standards
ESMA Tyre Standards:
What UAE Importers Must Know
A practical guide to Emirates Authority for Standardization & Metrology (ESMA) certification, GCC Standardization Organisation (GSO) marks, and how wholesale tyres sourced from Thailand meet every requirement.
What is ESMA and Why It Matters
The Emirates Authority for Standardization & Metrology (ESMA) is the UAE federal body responsible for setting and enforcing product standards. For wholesale tyre importers, ESMA tyre compliance is the gatekeeper: any pneumatic tyre entering the UAE for commercial sale must conform to ESMA-adopted standards or it will be refused at customs and returned at the importerβs expense.
ESMA does not issue its own separate tyre standard. Instead, it adopts and enforces the GCC Standardization Organisation (GSO) standard, which applies across all six GCC member states β UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain. This means a tyre that meets ESMA tyre compliance for UAE entry is legally compliant across the entire GCC free-trade zone.
If you are importing a full FCL (full container load) through Jebel Ali for re-export to Saudi Arabia, Oman, or Kuwait, ESMA/GSO compliance clears once at the port of entry and covers onward GCC distribution. You do not re-certify at each border.
Which tyre categories fall under ESMA tyre compliance?
- Passenger car tyres (PCR) β all rim sizes
- Light truck and SUV tyres (LT/P-metric)
- Truck and bus radial tyres (TBR)
- Motorcycle tyres
- Off-road / OTR tyres for commercial use
Agricultural and specialist industrial tyres are generally outside the ESMA consumer-safety scope but may still require GCC customs documentation. Contact us for specific OTR requirements.
The GSO Tyre Standard: Core of ESMA Tyre Compliance
The governing standard behind ESMA tyre compliance is GSO 34 (Pneumatic Tyres for Motor Vehicles), aligned with UNECE Regulation 30 (passenger) and UNECE Regulation 54 (commercial), with amendments for Gulf climate conditions β specifically extreme heat performance above 50Β°C.
Covers construction, dimensions, load index, speed rating, and sidewall marking requirements for all passenger and light SUV fitments. Aligned with UNECE R30.
Covers truck, bus, and light commercial radial tyres. Performance requirements include high-load durability and heat-resistance testing. Aligned with UNECE R54.
Fuel efficiency (rolling resistance), wet grip grading, and noise labelling. Mandatory on the tyre itself and on sales documentation for UAE retail.
Test method standard for measuring rolling resistance coefficient β required as supporting documentation for GSO 1785 energy labelling compliance.
The UAE and GCC added supplementary heat endurance requirements to GSO 34 that go beyond baseline UNECE. Tyres must demonstrate sustained performance at ambient temperatures of 45β55Β°C. Major Thai manufacturers β Bridgestone Thailand, Deestone, and Maxxis Thailand β build specifically to these thresholds.
Required Marks and Labels for ESMA Tyre Compliance
ESMA Customs verifies marking compliance at Jebel Ali before releasing a shipment. To pass ESMA tyre compliance inspection, every tyre in the consignment must carry the following on the sidewall, moulded in during manufacture β not applied as stickers:
- GSAS / Emirates Quality Mark (EQM) β the UAE conformity mark proving the product has passed GSO testing. Displayed as a circular logo on the sidewall.
- Size designation β e.g. 265/65R17, in standard ISO format
- Load index and speed rating β numerical + letter code, e.g. 112H
- Tyre category β P, LT, C, or commercial designation
- DOT code β manufacture date and plant identifier
- Country of origin β βMade in Thailandβ moulded into sidewall
- Treadwear, traction, temperature grades (UTQG) β required on passenger tyres
Tyres manufactured more than 5 years before the date of UAE customs clearance are routinely rejected regardless of other compliance. Always confirm the DOT week code with your supplier before shipping β we provide the DOT breakdown sheet with every order confirmation.

How Thailand-Sourced Tyres Comply
Thailand is one of the worldβs top five tyre-producing nations, with major plants from Bridgestone, Michelin, Goodyear, Yokohama, Maxxis, Deestone, and Sumaxx operating under ISO/TS 16949 quality systems β the same standard required for automotive supply chains globally.
Thai manufacturers have actively sought GSAS/EQM certification for GCC-bound production lines because the UAE/GCC market is one of their largest export destinations. This means the compliance paperwork already exists at the factory level β you are not starting from scratch.
PrimeTyresHub supplies the full GSAS/EQM test certificate, Certificate of Origin (endorsed by the Thai Chamber of Commerce), GSO 1785 energy label documentation, and the ESMA product registration reference for each SKU in your order. All documents are provided in English and Arabic where required.
Why Thailand over China for ESMA tyre compliance?
Chinese tyre brands have faced repeated ESMA tyre compliance rejections and customs holds for labelling non-conformance. Thai manufacturers, by contrast, produce specifically for Middle East conditions and maintain standing GSAS certifications that are renewed annually. For a wholesale importer, this means fewer customs delays, lower risk of consignment rejection, and cleaner documentation for your end customers.

From placing a wholesale order to clearing Jebel Ali customs β what to expect at each stage of the ESMA tyre compliance process.
UAE vs Other GCC Markets
While GSO standards apply GCC-wide, each member state has its own customs authority and may apply additional local requirements. Here is what wholesale buyers distributing beyond the UAE should know:
| Market | Primary port | Local body | Notes for tyre importers |
|---|---|---|---|
| UAE | Jebel Ali | ESMA | Primary GCC hub; GSAS/EQM clearance here covers re-exports |
| Saudi Arabia | Jeddah / Dammam | SASO | SASO Certificate of Conformity additionally required for direct import |
| Oman | Sohar / Muscat | DGSM | GSO mark accepted; straightforward re-export via UAE |
| Kuwait | Shuwaikh | KOWSMD | GSO mark accepted; some additional Arabic labelling preferred |
| Qatar | Hamad Port | QS | GSO mark accepted; re-export from UAE requires transit documents |
| Bahrain | Khalifa Bin Salman | BSMD | Smallest market; GSO mark accepted with standard documentation |
If you are importing directly into Saudi Arabia (not re-exporting via UAE), you will need a SASO Certificate of Conformity in addition to GSO/ESMA certification. We can supply the required SASO-compatible test reports for all SKUs. Ask us about this during order confirmation.
